Huge Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies Poster Reveals New Plot Details

A massive new “tapestry” poster for ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’ has been debuted on Digital Spy, but you’ll need a ginormous widescreen monitor to fully appreciate its majesty.

Stitching together scenes from Peter Jackson’s final Middle Earth foray to devastating effect, the banner packs in more detail than your puny human eyes will be able to comprehend in one sitting.

Here’s seven new bits of info about the third and final ‘Hobbit’ film that we’ve managed to glean from this epic poster.

Saruman is back!

Sir Christopher Lee’s white wizard Saruman looks set to return in some capacity for the final installment. He made a brief cameo in ‘An Unexpected Journey’ and he looks battle-ready in this new poster, standing behind other veteran ‘Lord of the Rings’ characters Lord Elrond (Hugo Weaving), Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellen) and Lady Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), who appears to be in some sort of peril.

Luke’s Dragon

Before the mighty battle can begin, there’s the tiny matter of Smaug to be dealt with first. He was last seen swooping into Lake Town at the end of ‘Desolation of Smaug’ roaring “I am fire. I am death!”. Someone will have to clip his wings and that someone is going to be Bard, played by Luke Evans, who has been freed and appears to be brandishing the giant Black Arrow.

Heavy is the crown

Richard Armitage’s Thorin Oakenshield can be seen perched on a throne, wearing some bad-ass new warrior armour. Obviously, fans of the book will know the story, but for those that don’t, this section shows that the dwarf king has reclaimed his mountain throne from the mighty Smaug, but at what cost? He certainly doesn’t look happy about the situation.

National elf service

Dodgy Photoshopping aside, it’s great to see Evangeline Lilly’s warrior elf Tauriel take centre stage in this new poster. She was one of the best elements of ‘Desolation of Smaug’ and hopefully this poster prominence means she’ll play a big part in ‘Five Armies’ too.

Bats

Those familiar with Tolkien’s book will know what “Fell Bats” join forces with the orcs and wargs in the ‘Battle of the Five Armies’, arriving like “a sea of locusts” and they are declared common enemy by the leaders of the elves, men, and dwarves. The hardcore fans will be glad to see they make an appearance on the poster.

There’s a moose loose

Lee Pace’s Thranduil looks like he’ll be taking a break from delivering sonorous elf speeches by actually getting stuck into some fighting in ‘The Hobbit 3’. Here he’s seen astride his giant battle deer, leading the elves to war, so hopefully we’ll get to see his mighty beast laying swathes of orcs aside with his massive antlers. Oof.

The fifth army

So we have the orcs and wargs, taking on the men of Lake-town (led by Bard), the Elves, and the dwarves, but where is the fifth army? In the book, the final military force is one of Giant Eagles from the Misty Mountains. This is probably them preparing to swoop into battle, but Warner Bros. will probably want to keep that plot detail under wraps for now. Whoops – spoilers! One key player in the film that is missing from the poster is the shapeshifter Beorn, who is likely to play big part in the final battle, taking on the orcs in his bear form.

‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’ is coming to cinemas on 12 December.
