Marvel Reveals Huge Slate Of New Movies Including Captain Marvel and Black Panther

It’s the comic book movie event everyone has been waiting for – Marvel’s big mystery announcement. And it looks as though they’ve followed in DC’s footsteps as they unveil their Phase Three slate.

In an event held at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles, the stage was set for a very special announcement. After a warm fanfare, Marvel Studio boss Kevin Feige took to the stage, and revealed the studio’s upcoming films.

“Feige wanted to announce this at San Diego Comic-Con 2014,” said Marvel PR Patrick Cavanaugh. “But things hadn’t come together until recently.”

But what can expect from Marvel Studios over the coming years? We’ve got the full rundown below…

Captain America: Civil War – 6 May 2016

image

It’s the movie that Marvel fans have been waiting for since the MCU - that’s ‘Marvel Cinematic Universe’ - first began. And now it has finally confirmed that it’ll be bringing ‘Civil War’ to the big screen. But we shouldn’t expect it to follow the comic books to the letter…

“Civil War is the beginning of Phase Three,” explained Feige. “[Civil War] is very hard, it was very hard, that’s why we didn’t announce it until today.”

At this exclusive event, some footage was shown from the upcoming ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ which highlights the growing rift between Iron Man and Captain America. “Cap and Tony are talking about the Maximoff kids while chopping wood,” explained Cavanaugh. “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes… pulled apart like cotton candy.”

Of course, the big question remains. Which Marvel superheroes will appear in ‘Captain America: Civil War’? Although that remains unclear, one thing is for certain – Black Panther will make his debut in the upcoming movie… and will appear in full costume.

Doctor Strange – 4 November 2016

image

After skirting around the issue, Marvel has finally confirmed ‘Doctor Strange’ with a release date set for 2016. Of course, Feige was keen to confirm that Scott Derrickson is on board to direct… but that much was already a given.

Of course, the real question is who will be playing Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme… and while Benedict Cumberbatch has been tipped for the role, it looks as though that might not be as certain as we thought.

“If it was confirmed, we would have announced it today,” said Kevin Feige. Adding that the official casting will be announced “some time before the release of the movie.” Nice and specific then…

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 – 5 May 2017

image

Another obvious announcement came with ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2’ – a film which was seemingly green-lit before the first movie even appeared in cinemas. Unfortunately, Marvel still hasn’t announced an official title for the ‘Guardians’ sequel… and so little is known of the impending movie.

Apparently, a video message from director James Gunn was shown at the exclusive event. But Feige has kept further details under wraps.

Asked whether Cosmo would appear in the sequel, he simply replied: “When Mr. Gunn returns from Tokyo, those are questions we’ll go through.”

Thor: Ragnarok – 28 July 2017

image

It looks as though Thor will be getting another sequel, this time titled ‘Ragnarok’. Unfortunately, no further details were announced… but does this tie in with Marvel’s big screen ‘Civil War’ plans?

In the comic books, Tony Stark creates a clone of Thor during the Civil War to aid them in their fight. Taking the name ‘Ragnarok’, it looks as though Marvel may be planning to delve into this side of Thor’s backstory. But does this mean Thor will be killed off at some point? Will he become one of the first casualties of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Black Panther – 3 November 2017

image

It’s been rumoured for some time, but finally we have our confirmation – ‘Black Panther’ will be getting his own solo movie in 2017. One of the first black superheroes to appear in print, it looks as though he’ll be the MCU’s first black hero with his own solo movie.

And that’s not all – Marvel has revealed that he’ll be played by none other than Chadwick Boseman.

Of course, there have been hints that Black Panther would appear for some time… most notably, numerous mentions of Wakanda. But will he make a cameo in the upcoming ‘Age of Ultron’, perhaps even in a post-credit sting? We’ll have to wait and see… but it’s looking increasingly likely.

Captain Marvel – 6 July 2018

image

It’s official – Marvel has announced its first female superhero movie. ‘Captain Marvel’ has been rumoured for some time, and now Marvel has lifted the lid on this hot, new property.

“Captain Marvel has gone by many names,” said Feige. “This character’s name is Carol Danvers… This is the time to bring out Captain Marvel!”

Again, little details were given… but we’ve already seen various actresses tipped for the role including the always awesome Katee Sackhoff. But it looks as though we have a long wait before we find out who will be suiting up as Captain Marvel.

The Inhumans – 2 November 2018

image

One of Marvel’s more obscure properties, it seems The Inhumans will be heading to the screen after the recent relaunch of their comic book series.

Again, it’s been rumoured for some time… and there are practically no details released just yet.

Of course, this will be Marvel’s third major superhero group to grace the big screen… with The Defenders heading to Netflix as they attempt to corner every market possible. But how will audiences respond to the relatively unknown heroes?

Avengers: Infinity War – 4 May 2018 & 3 May 2019

image

It’s been on the cards for some time – a final stand-off against Marvel’s biggest antagonist, Thanos. Everything has been leading up to this, and it looks as though we’ve finally got the movie we’ve all been waiting for… split into two parts a la ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’.

“The notion that we’ve always had a plan,” said Feige. “The beginning of a culmination of everything that has come before.” Showing a montage of the previous films, it wasn’t long before an image of the Infinity Gauntlet appeared, and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ was finally announced.

Of course, little is known about this film, other than that it will tie up the loose threads of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe via the Infinity Stones – those always important artefacts that have been littered throughout the movies. But will Josh Brolin reprise his role as Thanos? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

Closing the awesome Phase Three with ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ it’s unclear which Avengers will make it through to this final battle. But one thing’s for certain – Marvel has just revealed a pretty impressive line-up. And it’s going to give us plenty to talk about in the coming years.
