New Captain America Will Be African-American: Will Films Follow Suit?

Just one day after revealing the new Thor will be a woman, Marvel has said that in a new run of comics, Captain America will be black.

That’s not to say Steve Rogers will change race. Rather his friend Sam Wilson (a.k.a. The Falcon) will take over as Cap with Rogers having been drained of his super-soldier serum and turned into an old man in a battle with villain Iron Nail in Captain America #21.

It’s a revolutionary move for the company, who recently introduced their first Muslim superhero in Kamala Khan (Ms Marvel), while African-American youngster Miles Morales is currently the titular webslinger in the ‘Ultimate Spider-man’ comic.

Even more interesting is what it will do for the movie franchise. ‘Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier’ introduced Wilson (played by the excellent Anthony Mackie) to the Marvel universe.

Coincidentally, Chris Evans sensationally said he would quit acting altogether last year to concentrate on directing, though he later backtracked.

Could his career doubts open the way up for Mackie to take over?

Marvel are not averse to bold casting decisions and does anyone go and see ‘Captain America’ just for Evans? He’s great, but it’s the spectacle and the character rather than the star, surely.

We know the superhero world is inter-connected, so there are endless permutations available to the filmmakers – Wilson could take over as Cap for half a movie or do a cameo in ‘Ant-Man’ as a nod to the change.

It remains to be seen whether Marvel will be as radical on the big screen as they are in the comics.
