The New Mutants X-Men Spin-Off In The Works

The ‘X-Men’ universe is about to get a lot bigger… as the ‘New Mutants’ get their very own spin-off movie.

According to Deadline, the teenage mutant superheroes-in-training will be getting their very own movie… and Fox has even pinned down a director.

“Fox has closed a deal with ‘The Fault In Our Stars’ director Josh Boone to co-write and direct ‘The New Mutants’, a standalone spinoff that expands its X-Men movie universe,” they revealed. “The series, already part of the X-Men Comics universe, introduces a new crop of mutant characters born with special powers.”

“Boone will co-write with Knate Gwaltney. Simon Kinberg will produce with Lauren Shuler Donner.”

Of course, Marvel comic book fans will know all about the New Mutants… but to the mainstream movie audience, this may be a little left field.

Originally formed in 1982, the New Mutants were students of Professor Charles Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters… much like the original X-Men. But while those original mutants had since grown into adulthood, the New Mutants were essentially a bunch of all-new X-Men.

And they were a lot more diverse…

The original line-up consisted of Canonball, their almost-invulnerable American leader; Karma, a 19-year-old Vietnamese girl who could possess her victims; Mirage, a Cheyenne girl who created visual illusions; Sunspot, a Brazilian lad who could absorb and release solar energy; and Wolfsbane, a Scottish mutant with the ability to turn into a wolf.

Obviously, Fox has done rather well in mining everything they can out of the ‘X-Men’ franchise. After all, they’ve managed to successfully spin-off Wolverine into his own solo franchise, as well as introducing ‘Deadpool’ and even giving Channing Tatum his very own ‘Gambit’ movie.

And now ‘The New Mutants’ looks to be the next chapter in the ‘X-Men’ universe.

“We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe,” said producer Simon Kinberg. “And so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters.”

But will the ‘New Mutants’ be able to rival the ‘X-Men’?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But with Josh Boone on board, the upcoming spin-off is already off to a cracking start.
