Oscar Isaac: X-Men: Apocalypse Costume Will Be Mix Of Practical And Digital Effects (Exclusive)

Apocalypse, the evil villain set to feature in the next ‘X-Men’ film, is not your average looking bad guy. Now thanks to the actor who’ll play him, we know now a bit more about how the filmmakers plan to realise his unconventional look on screen.

Oscar Isaac has exclusively revealed to Yahoo Movies that the transformation he’ll undergo to play the titular villain in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ will be a combination of physical and CGI.

“It’ll be a mix [of practical and digital]. I haven’t had a script so I haven’t had a chance to look through the script and see what the exact requirements are, but I think it’ll be a mixture of physical, aided with some robotic technology.”

The 35-year-old star let slip this nugget of X-info while we were chatting with him earlier this week about his new film ‘Ex Machina’ (in cinemas now) and we think his “robotic technology” comment was a nod towards that film, rather than a direct reference to X-Men.

He also revealed that pre-production for the film, which is coming to cinemas in 2016, is already underway.

“After we finish here I’m heading to do a head cast [for ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’], which they do often. You spend 3-4 hours with them putting plaster all over your head and they get a sense of what your face is like and what shape your head is, so they can start figuring out the costume and the make up and all that stuff, which is pretty fun.”

In the comics Apocalypse is an ancient mutant with the ability to complete control over the molecules of his body. He’s usually portrayed as a hulking bruiser with grey and blue-skin who wears an elaborate armoured suit which has been augmented by alien tech, so a combined physical and digital transformation seems appropriate.

Finally, Isaac told us he wasn’t surprised to hear that Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen wouldn’t be returning for the sixth X-Men film, as he was always under the impression that it would be strictly for the new cast.

“We actually haven’t got a script yet so I don’t really know exactly the ins and outs of the story, but I assumed [Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen] might not be in it, as I knew it was going to be the younger cast – Fassbender, McAvoy, Jen Lawrence – so I imagined they wouldn’t be doing the same thing as they did in the last film.”

‘Ex Machina’ is in cinemas now. ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ will be coming to cinemas in 2016.
