Producer Jason Blum has confirmed that this October’s ‘Paranormal Activity: the Ghost Dimension’ will be the last film in the hugely popular horror series.

As the first images and a teaser for the upcoming trailer are released, Blum tells USA Today, “It’s coming to an end. This is it, the finale. We’re saying it before the movie opens.

“We’re not going to grind this horror franchise into the ground. This will keep ‘Paranormal Activity’ as part of this culture and this particular time in a really fantastic way.”

‘Paranormal Actvity: The Ghost Dimension’ is officially the fifth film in the series, although there have also been 2014 spin-off ‘Paranormal Activity: the Marked Ones’ and 2010′s unofficial Japanese sequel ‘Paranormal Activity 2: Tokyo Night.’

Made in 2007 for $15,000, writer-director Oren Peli’s original ‘Paranormal Activity’ was bought by Blum’s company Blumhouse and distributed worldwide via Paramount Pictures in 2009. It wound up becoming the most profitable film ever in budget-to-box office terms, grossing almost $195 million worldwide.

The film popularised the ‘found footage’ format, which has become one of the dominant formats in horror in recent years. It also helped establish Blumhouse as the most successful horror production house of the moment, going on to produce such hits as the ‘Insidious’ and ‘Sinister’ films (both of which have entries this year).

However, the ‘Paranormal Activity’ series has seen steadily reducing returns, and behind the scenes issues - including shooting the ‘microbudget’ film in 3D - meant that ‘The Ghost Dimension’ missed its initially scheduled February 2015 release date in favour of a Halloween release.

Of the film itself, Blum promises ‘The Ghost Dimension’ will provide closure for long-standing fans.

“We couldn’t go just teasing. All the questions that everyone has asked from the past ‘Paranormal Activity’ films: What does Toby look like? What’s the backstory to the families? These questions have been teased out. Now they will be answered.“

Still, Blum doesn’t rule out the possibility the franchise might be revived one day.

“At some point, might there be a reboot? You never know. We’ve never discussed it. (But) we made this movie like it’s the end of this ‘Paranormal’ line for sure.”

‘Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension’ opens in UK cinemas on 30 October 2015. Look out for the first trailer very soon.
