The Crow Troubles Continue - Studio May Sell Reboot

It seems the troubles surrounding ‘The Crow’ reboot have no end in sight, as it is reported that Relativity Media are looking to sell off the distribution rights to the long in-development movie.

According to Variety, the studio plan to flog both ‘The Crow’ and another upcoming feature ‘Hunter Killer’ (an action movie starring Billy Bob Thornton and Common) to another company, STX Entertainment, for US distribution.

Relativity are clearly not making this move lightly, as reportedly they need to pay off debts of $150 million within the next ten days - and owe a further $200 million after that.

In a statement, Relativity president Tucker Tooley says, “We frequently have other studios approach us about partnering on some of our films which we have done several times in the past.

“STX has recently approached us. Relativity Studios has no interest in selling ‘The Crow’ or ‘Hunter Killer’ outright and no deal has been reached.”

These rather alarming figures would seem to cast a new light on the troubles facing the reboot of the cult 1994 film starring the late Brandon Lee, based on James O’Barr’s graphic novel.

Having been on the cards for several years, the reboot has repeatedly stumbled along the way - most recently with the eleventh hour departure of lead actor Jack Huston, due to scheduling issues.

Huston had been attached to the film barely three months, having been revealed in March as the replacement for the previously attached Luke Evans, who had himself pulled out to pursue other projects when the film was delayed.

Nor was Evans the first actor linked to the project, after a long list of big names including Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg and Tom Hiddleston were all courted for the role of supernatural avenger Eric Draven.

And this has not been the only major personnel change on ‘The Crow,’ with director Corin Hardy having boarded the film in December 2014 to replace original director  F. Javier Gutiérrez, who dropped out in favour of the upcoming ‘Rings.’

Despite these behind the scenes issues, word is ‘The Crow’ reboot is still planned to shoot this summer at the new Pinewood Studios facility in Cardiff, and it has been claimed that Nicholas Hoult and Jack O’Connell are being considered as replacements for Huston.
