The Crow Reboot Stalls Again as Jack Huston Exits

‘The Crow’ just can’t seem to catch a break. The long in-development reboot of the cult 1994 Gothic revenge fantasy based on James O’Barr’s comic book has stumbled once more, as latest leading man Jack Huston (’Boardwalk Empire’) has dropped out.

According to Variety, scheduling issues have forced Huston to withdraw from the film, currently expected to shoot this summer in Cardiff. This leaves the central role of murdered musician turned supernatural avenger Eric Draven vacant once again.

Huston was the latest in a long line of actors attached to the role originated by the late Brandon Lee, replacing Luke Evans, whose own busy schedule had forced him to pull out.

Prior to this, the many actors courted for the role included Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg and Tom Hiddleston.

Variety mention that studio Relativity now have their eye on Nicholas Hoult (’X-Men,’ ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’) and Jack O’Connell (’Unbroken,’ ‘Starred Up’) as possible replacements - either of whom would be an intriguing prospect.

There is no mention of whether Andrea Riseborough, who was known to be in talks for the key villain role, remains attached to ‘The Crow.’ However, it is mentioned that Forest Whitaker may be in line for another role in the film, which is expected to be a more faithful adaptation of the original comic than the 1994 film.

Director Corin Hardy says, “Jack Huston is unfortunately unavailable to continue with us… ‘‘The Crow’ is an amazing project, and I am grateful that we have the time and patience to get it right. We look forward to unveiling our new lead and starting to film over the next several weeks.”

Relativity add, “Jack is a remarkably gifted actor, and we look forward to working with him in the future. Corin Hardy has a tremendous vision for ‘The Crow,’ and we are working closely with him to continue prepping the movie and supporting him as he brings his vision to the big screen.”

Despite a lot of fanciful talk about the project being cursed (to which some will doubtless attribute Huston’s departure), ‘The Crow’ spawned an enduring - though not especially laudable - franchise in the 1990s, with three sequels and a short-lived TV spin-off series.

This latest take on ‘The Crow’ will be British director Corin Hardy’s second feature film. His debut, horror movie ‘The Hallow,’ opens in the UK and Ireland on 13 November.
