Veteran action heroine Milla Jovovich has revealed when she is scheduled to reprise for the last time her signature role as Alice, zombie killer extraordinaire of the ‘Resident Evil’ series.

The actress announced to fans on Facebook that she will start work on ‘Resident Evil: the Final Chapter’ this August - having not long since given birth to her second child with her husband, writer-producer-director Paul WS Anderson.

Speaking about watching her weight during pregnancy, Jovovich said, “I’m really proud of myself for not gaining the same amount of weight that I did with our first child (75 lbs.) because I have to be ready to start filming “Resident Evil- The Final Chapter” in August of this year and I will also be nursing an infant simultaneously (get ready wardrobe department for Alice’s new “easy mama access” costume;)) so I don’t want to be on any extreme diets to get ready to go back to “action hero” mode!”

While it has been known for some time that one last ‘Resident Evil’ movie was on the cards, the start of production had not been confirmed until now.

Anderson’s series, adapted from the much-loved video games, has defied expectations far and wide since its inception with 2002’s ‘Resident Evil.’ Though generally lambasted by critics, fans of the game and zombie movie aficionados, the film proved a huge hit, enough to launch a sequel in ‘Resident Evil: Apocalypse’ from director Alexander Witt in 2004 (which received even worse reviews).

2007’s third film ‘Resident Evil: Extinction,’ from ‘Highlander’ director Russell Mulcahy, garnered a more positive response both critically and commercially. Jovovich and Anderson married in 2009, before reuniting as actress and director on 2010’s ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ - the first of the films to be shot in 3D, which also wound up the biggest box office hit of the series, raking in over $296 million worldwide.

Anderson returned to direct 2012’s fifth installment ‘Resident Evil: Retribution’ (also in 3D, to which Anderson is a confirmed devotee), and will once again return to helm ‘Resident Evil: the Final Chapter.’

The ‘Resident Evil’ series has grossed over $915 million in cinemas alone, challenging the old notions that neither video game adaptations nor female-centred action movies could be a success. Even so, whether or not anyone would class them as truly great films is another matter; last year James Cameron (known to be a huge influence on Paul WS Anderson) called the original ‘Resident Evil’ his favourite “guilty pleasure” movie.

It was also reported last year that a ‘Resident Evil’ spin-off TV series may also be in the works once the films end, but there has been no further word on that thus far.

'Resident Evil: the Final Chapter' is provisionally set to reach screens in September 2016.
