First Cut Of Exodus: Gods And Kings Was Over Four Hours Long (Exclusive)

With its meaty 150 minute run time, ‘Exodus: Gods And Kings’ can hardly be accused of being a lightweight film, but Joel Edgerton has revealed that an early cut of the film clocked in at nearly double that.

“I think Ridley’s first cut [of ‘Exodus’] was four and a half hours [long],” the actor who plays Ramesses II explains in our exclusive interview above.

“There’s a ton of stuff with Sigourney [Weaver that didn’t make the final film]. There could be an extended cut, that’s the beauty of the Blu-ray.”

Film critics have lamented the limited screen time afforded to Weaver’s character Tuya in the final film, leading many to speculate that the majority of her scenes had been cut. Edgerton’s comments appear to confirm this theory.

The film features a number of high-profile actors including Sir Ben Kingsley, Aaron Paul, and John Turturro whose screen time seems to have suffered for the sake of a palatable run-time, so we could see Ridley Scott deliver a longer “director’s cut” sometime in the future like he did for ‘Kingdom of Heaven’.

“The [‘Exodus’] screenplay wasn’t that long, but there’s a good extra 15-20 minutes of movie there I think,” Edgerton adds.

“But a quick show is a good show I think, sometimes when it comes to movies.”

'Exodus: Gods and Kings' is in cinemas on Boxing Day.
