Robert Downey Jr Talks Iron Man and Captain America: Civil War

Iron Man himself Robert Downey Jr has been talking at length about Tony Stark and Steve Roger’s forthcoming battle in ‘Captain America: Civil War’.

Speaking to Empire Magazine (via CBM) for their ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ cover story, Downey Jr talked about taken a “lesser position” to help the Marvel Cinematic Universe ticking, and what will be driving both Iron Man and Captain America in the 2016 blockbuster.

Asked what his ‘Civil War’ appearance means for Tony Stark’s future in the ongoing Marvel series, he said: “They said to me, ‘If we have you, we can do this, or ‘Cap 3’ has to be something else. It’s nice to feel needed. And at this point it’s about helping each other, too.

"I look at it as a competition and I go, ‘Wow, maybe if these two franchises teamed up and I can take even a lesser position, with people I like and directors I respect, maybe we can keep things bumping along."

The insinuation is that RDJ might not be ready to carry a whole movie like he did in ‘Iron Man 1-3’ but is game for collaborative, screen-sharing roles like this one in another Avenger’s series.

Empire also asked him about the ‘Civil War’ storyline (which sees Iron Man and Cap clash over their support and opposition to a proposed act that’d mean those with super-powers must register with the US government) and what causes the change in Stark’s character.

"It’s natural to change your views," he says. "The main thing to me is, what sort of incident could occur, and what sort of framework could we find Tony in? The clues about where we might find him next are in ‘[Age of] Ultron’.

"What would it take for Tony to completely turn around everything he’s stood for? Joss [Whedon] brings this up all the time. It’s kind of weird that these guys would have all these throw downs all over planet Earth and yet when the movie’s over, nobody minds. What would the American government do if this were real? Wouldn’t it be interesting to see Tony doing something you wouldn’t imagine?"

Tease.

He was also asked about Iron Man becoming a villain. He avoided the question, but his answer was no less intriguing.

"I wouldn’t put it that way. The biggest question is, for Chris and for Cap, how do we bring Cap to a place where people go, ‘Man, I never thought I would see such a vast change in Steve.’

"After you see ‘Snowpiercer’, you’re like, ‘I want to see a little bit of that guy.’"

Is Tony Stark going to drive Captain America to the edge? We’ll find out when ‘Captain America: Civil War’ lands on 29 April 2016.
