Ron Howard Weighs In On New Spider-Man

After working with Tom Holland on his upcoming movie ‘In The Heart Of The Sea’, it looks as though director Ron Howard is a bit of a fan of our new Spider-Man.

During an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, the prolific director offered up his thoughts on Tom Holland’s casting as the all-new Spider-Man… and it seems he’s a bit of a fan.

“Tom’s young, incredibly agile and fit,” he said. “He’s also very accessible and very relatable. He’s one of us and has tremendous skills as an actor. He’ll bring humanity, heart, humour and energy to his version of Peter Parker.”

Of course, Tom Holland is best known for playing the title role in ‘Billy Elliot: The Musical’. And I can’t help thinking that his experience with choreographers is really going to pay off in his new, web-slinging role.

“I really do feel that the training that he gained through ‘Billy Elliot’ has served him well,” Howard added.  “He’s incredibly disciplined and at the same time he’s full of fun, full of life and really enjoying the experience.”

But it’s not just Tom’s technical prowess which has impressed the renowned director. It seems he’s also a rather nice young man to work with.

“[He’s] very down-to-earth, very hard working… a great, great work ethic, especially for somebody his age, but a great sense of fun. I feel like he cares a lot about what is possible with a scene and a character, and he’s willing to give everything that he’s got to try to fulfil it.”

Asked whether he thinks Tom Holland will handle the pressure of such an iconic role, Ron Howard compared the casting to that of Michael Keaton as Batman.

“People doubted whether he’d be a good Batman,” he said. “Fans were up in arms and so forth… and Keaton turned out to be stunning, and many people’s favourite of all time. Tom will face some of that, but he’s got his feet on the ground and a good sense of how the film Industry works as a business and he’ll handle the pressure well.”

“He’ll also give a very good performance,” he added. “I’m confident of that. He’s a great young talent and he also has the attitude to maximise all of his potential. I’m very excited for him.”

Will he make a great Spider-Man? For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But Tom Holland already has the Ron Howard seal of approval.
