Sam J. Jones May Return For Flash Gordon Sequel

It looks as though original ‘Flash Gordon’ star Sam J. Jones may return for an all-new sequel.

During an interview with Den of Geeks US, the 60-year-old ‘Flash Gordon’ star revealed that he may return in the upcoming movie… and it’s not going to be a reboot.

“Matthew Reilly, VP of production at Fox Studios, acquired the screenplay rights to Flash Gordon last year, and he hired John Davis and his staff to write the script,” he said. “They’re looking to bring out a sequel actually.”

“I met with Matt, we’re in talks about that,” he added. “I’m very excited. A lot of people over the years, including Stephen Sommers and Neil H Moritz, have acquired the screenplay rights, but for whatever reason they did not do a follow up on the option. So I’m very excited about it.”

Of course, an all-new ‘Flash Gordon’ movie has been in the works for some time… but this is the first we’ve heard that it will be a sequel to the original 1980 cult classic. In fact, many of us assumed that it would be yet-another Hollywood reboot.

But will the new ‘Flash Gordon’ really be a sequel, or has Sam Jones got the wrong end of the stick? Either way, it looks as though he may return… but whether or not he plays Flash Gordon himself is another matter entirely.

“However they want to use me, I’m very excited,” he said. “I told Matt, however he wants to use me, keep one thing in mind: whatever a younger, leading man can do, I cannot only match him, I can do more! If he does 20 pull-ups, I can do 30 pull-ups. If he can do 100 push-ups, I can do 150 push-ups. Just keep that in mind!”

Clearly he’s just as enthusiastic about the role as he was in 1980… and that’s definitely a good thing. But let’s face it – at the age of 60, it’s more likely that we’ll see him passing the baton to the next generation of epic space heroes.

In fact, I can’t help thinking that he could end up playing a mentor in a ‘son-of-Flash’ style film. Or perhaps he’ll appear in an entirely different role. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see.

But most importantly, will Brian Blessed return? While Jones has no details about Brian Blessed’s involvement in the sequel, he has only kind words about the classic Flash Gordon star.

“He just kept everybody laughing. Just a wonderful man,” he said. “Crazy, of course, he’s a bit bonkers. We’ve appeared together in London once or twice, and I’m looking forward to appearing with him again. He’s a character, he kept everyone entertained on the making of the film, and he’s still doing it.”

Let’s just hope he gets to shout “Gordon’s alive?” one more time.
