Simon Pegg Will Write Star Trek 3

After Roberto Orci’s exit, it looks as though ‘Star Trek 3’ has a new writer… and they’ve managed to beam up ‘Star Trek’ star, Simon Pegg.

According to Deadline Hollywood, the 44-year-old ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ actor will has landed the job of writing the upcoming sequel… as well as starring in it.

“Simon Pegg has been set to co-write Star Trek 3, the film that just got Fast & Furious director Justin Lin aboard after Roberto Orci exited the helmer chair,” they revealed. “He will co-write the script with Doug Jung, creator of the TNT series Dark Blue.”

But what happened to Roberto Orci’s earlier script?

He was recently rumoured to be taking the director’s chair… but instead, Justin Lin took over at the last minute. And after apparently submitting a first draft, it looks as though that may be what spurred Paramount to find somebody else.

It’s this draft which has led some to speculate that Paramount weren’t impressed with the direction of the ‘Star Trek’ sequel… and has led to a bit of a reshuffle when it comes to the writers and director.

Of course, this is terrible news for Orci, who penned both ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’… but great news for legendary geek, Simon Pegg.

But is he the right man to take over?

Obviously, he’s starred in both recent instalments of the rebooted ‘Star Trek’ franchise as the iconic character, Montgomery ‘Scotty’ Scott… and is fast becoming one of the most famous faces of the franchise. But that’s just the half of it. After co-writing the Cornetto Trilogy with Edgar Wright, he’s certainly got the experience to put pen to paper.

But can he write a great follow-up to ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’?

Let’s not forget that Simon Pegg is a ‘Star Trek’ fan. He lives and breathes sci-fi. And after the many geeky references in ‘Spaced’ and ‘Shaun of the Dead’, it’s not as though he has to prove his geek credentials.

Of course, the movie is still a long way off, so for now we’ll have to wait and see. But I get the feeling he’ll kick it up to Warp Factor ten for his ‘Star Trek’ writing debut.

‘Star Trek 3’ heads to cinemas on 8 July 2016.
