Star Trek 3 Title Revealed

It looks as though ‘Star Trek 3’ may already have a title – ‘Star Trek Beyond’.

According to Trek Movie, the rather snappy title has already been decided for the upcoming ‘Star Trek’ sequel… and there’s a rather good reason that the rumoured title was chosen.

“It appears that ‘Star Trek Beyond‘ may be the title of the upcoming Star Trek film,” they reveal. “As far as the storyline is concerned, the title suggests that the new film will venture farther out into the galaxy than we have seen in the previous two Abrams films, as co-writer Simon Pegg has been hinting at for some time now.”

And it seems they have some rather compelling evidence to support the rumoured name.

“TrekMovie.com has it on good authority that Star Trek Beyond is being used for the title of the new Trek film,” they claim. “What we do know is that the name has been registered with the Motion Picture Association of America, a step that typically signifies a title has been settled on for an upcoming movie.”

Of course, with Bad Robot’s history of secrecy and misdirection, it’s entirely possible that this could be a decoy… But with the film nearing production (and with the official release date growing ever nearer) it seems Trek movie may have struck oil.

And then there’s the title in itself…

During a recent interview with Den of Geek, the upcoming sequel writer Simon Pegg spoke about where he’d like to take the franchise. And it looks as though ‘Beyond’ is more than a little apt.

“For me, it’s now about the spirit of adventure and exploration and also, in modern terms, just how would that be for people, to be away for that amount of time and that kind of stuff.”

It certainly sounds as though Pegg is a fan of the original five-year-mission premise – bringing ‘Star Trek’ back to a time of universe-spanning exploration and adventure. And in an interview with The Guardian, he suggested that his script might just bring the franchise back to its roots.

“It’s a story about frontierism and adventure and optimism and fun,” he said. “And that’s where we want to take it, you know. Where no man has gone before – where no one has gone before, sensibly corrected for a slighter more enlightened generation. But yeah, that’s the mood at the moment.”

Quite where this will take the crew of the USS Enterprise remains to be seen… but I get the feeling that ‘Star Trek Beyond’ could be a rather appropriate title.

If the rumour turns out to be true.

‘Star Trek 3’ heads to cinemas on 8 July 2016.
