The Blob Remake Director Hints At New Vision For Monster

As a second remake of vintage monster movie ‘The Blob’ creeps to life, the director has dropped some hints that this latest take on the tale will take a slightly different direction - and that the monster will take a somewhat different shape.

In both the 1958 original and the gorier 1988 remake, the alien terror of the title was - well - a blob, a shuffling gelatinous mass which increases in size with everything it consumes (and it consumes a lot).

However, director of the upcoming third remake Simon West has revealed that things will be a little different this time around.

Speaking to Screen Relish, British director West says,  ”it’s going to be much more sci-fi than the original. It’s a bigger scale type of movie. It’s more ALIEN meets PREDATOR and designing the creature is a long and involved process cause its very sophisticated.

"It’s not going to be the goo pouring through windows. So, that’s taking a while to design and construct that.”

The mind boggles as to what this might entail, given that in all the existing ‘Blob’ movies (including 1972 sequel ‘Beware! The Blob’), the gooiness of the extra-terrestrial monster is somewhat paramount.

It would seem the plan is to achieve much if not all of this new creature work digitally. On his announcement as director of this latest remake in January, West said, “With modern CGI we can now fully realize the potential of ‘The Blob.’

"The world I create will be totally believable, immersive and emotionally satisfying. It’s a thrill to introduce an enduring icon to a wider audience and a whole new era of fans.”

Currently shooting military thriller ‘Stratton’ with Henry Cavill, West says ‘The Blob’ should go into production sometime between August and October of this year. No release date has yet been announced.

The director’s next movie ‘Wild Card’ - his third collaboration with Jason Statham, following 2011’s ‘The Mechanic’ and 2012’s ‘The Expendables 2’ - hits cinemas on 20 March.
