But no one who’s sat through both the ‘Lord Of The Rings’ trilogy and its prequel trilogy will miss the resonance. This is where the story ends for the six-part, 13-year-long Peter Jackson adaptation of Tolkien’s fantasy masterpieces.

‘Battle Of The Five Armies’ revives ‘’Edge Of Night’, a sad haunting song sung by Pippin in ‘The Return Of The King’, in a further echo of the previous saga.

It is, of course, all just a build-up for the mighty battle to come. “Will you have peace or will you have war?” Bard asks. “I will have war,” growls Thorin.

The message on the screen trails it “the defining chapter of the Middle Earth saga”.

Sir Ian McKellen, Hugo Weaving, Evangeline Lilly, Christopher Lee and the rest return to UK cinemas on December 12. We can’t wait.
