TRON 3 Begins Filming Later This Year

It’s time to fire up those lightcycles – ‘TRON 3’ has reportedly been approved by Disney, and will start filming later this year.

We’ve heard rumours of a third ‘TRON’ movie for some time – as far back as the original release of the first sequel, ‘TRON: Legacy’. But while the rumours persist, we’ve heard very little since. Many of us assumed that perhaps enthusiasm for the project had died out.

But according to a new report, ‘TRON 3’ seems to be happening…

According to Van City Buzz, the often-rumoured ‘TRON 3’ has been approved by Disney and will begin shooting by the end of the year.

“Walt Disney Pictures has green lighted the third film in the TRON series,” they reveal. “Filming is scheduled to begin on October 5, 2015. At this time, only Garrett Hedlund has been confirmed to return to the cast.”

Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen hints of a third ‘TRON’ movie… And when musician Giorgio Moroder revealed that he’d be working with Skrillex on music for a new ‘TRON’ videogame, let’s just say our interest was piqued.

“I’m going to meet Skrillex next week when I’m back,” he told Clash. “I’m doing the music for a game for Disney’s ‘TRON’. We have about five themes, electronic stuff and let’s see if he’s interested in remixing or re-working one of the songs.”

Obviously, this begged the question – what videogame?

It’s been over four years since the release of ‘TRON: Legacy’ and it seems a little out of left-field for Disney to pile funds into a new videogame at this stage. That is, unless there’s also a new movie in the works.

But could Moroder actually mean a game within Disney’s new ‘TRON’ movie? It certainly wouldn’t be a stretch – after all, we’ve seen many a program forced to take part in the games. And then the following tweet came to light…

Followed up by the Vancouver-based report, it looks as though they may actually be onto something. Although we have to point out that none of this has been confirmed by Disney. At least, not yet.

But one big question remains – should a third ‘TRON’ film be made?

Now, don’t get me wrong – I’ve been a fan of the original movie since I was a child. But after the release of ‘TRON: Legacy’, I couldn’t help feeling a bit let down. The visuals were truly stunning and with an impressive soundtrack, it looked and sounded the part.

But something that made the original ‘TRON’ so great was sadly missing.

It felt as though ‘TRON: Legacy’ simply tried too hard to get the look and feel right, without a solid story to back it all up. And with an impressive follow-up in the form of the videogame ‘TRON 2.0’, I couldn’t help thinking they should have turned to that game for inspiration.

Still, it looks as though we may be getting ‘TRON 3’ after all. And perhaps that gives Disney the chance to put things right. But will it match the original? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

‘TRON 3’ reportedly begins filming in October 2015.
