Update: Rings IS A Sequel To The Ring After All

Not unlike the video tape in ‘The Ring’ itself, unsubstantiated rumours have an unnerving tendency to get out of hand.

We, like most other news outlets online, were under the impression that ‘Rings,’ the upcoming third installment in the US horror series based on the popular Japanese franchise, was intended to be a prequel to the original remake.

However, director F Javier Guiterrez has taken to Twitter to explain that this is far from the truth:

The generally reliable Bloody Disgusting had previously reported that ‘Rings’ was planned to “take place years before the creation of [the cursed VHS] tape and tell the origin of Samara’s reign of terror.”

Just what led to this misunderstanding is unclear, but it does give pause for thought that this sequel - though set in the present day - might still delve deeper into the origins of the ghoulish Samara in one fashion or another.

Italian actress Matilda Lutz will star in the film, expected to begin production shortly, which has been scripted by Akiva Goldsman, David Loucka and Jacon Aaron Estes.

‘Rings’ opens on 13 November 2015.
