Why Is Loki So Appealing? Kenneth Branagh Thinks He Knows

Loki has blossomed into one of the most beloved characters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Kenneth Branagh thinks he knows why.

Branagh was the director who cast Tom Hiddleston as Loki in 2011’s ‘Thor’, and during a recent chat with IGN to promote his latest film ‘Cinderella’ the filmmaker explained why he’s so adored.

“People like damaged villains,” Branagh declared when asked about Loki’s appeal. “He was always an enormous part of the comics. A much loved villain, much of the way that happens on those big legacy pieces.”

Meanwhile, Branagh also believes that Loki flourished because Marvel Studios were able to find the perfect actor in the shape of Hiddleston to play the foe.

“They happened to find a great actor in Tom Hiddleston, who again brought depth to it the same way Cate Blanchett did with this stepmother role in ‘Cinderella’,” Branagh declared.

“Why people go to the dark side is always fascinating. The survival instinct makes them very inventive. It means they’re always surprising you. So, when you have that dark, damaged quality and literally a box of tricks to play with that kind of character is going to be around for a long time,” he stated.

Hiddleston’s Loki has appeared in 2011’s ‘Thor’, 2012’s ‘The Avengers’ and 2013’s ‘Thor: The Dark World’, while he’s next set to feature in both 2015’s ‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’ and 2017’s ‘Thor: Ragnarok’.
