28 Months Later Is 'In Discussion', Says Alex Garland

The screenwriter of ‘28 Days Later’, Alex Garland, has revealed that a third film in the horror franchise is close to becoming a reality.

During a recent chat with IGN, the long-time writer and (now) director spoke candidly about another instalment of the popular series while promoting his newly directed feature,’Ex Machina’.

“We’ve just started talking about it seriously,” he says in regards to the ongoing speculation over ‘28 Months Later’. “We’ve got an idea. Danny [Boyle] and [producer] Andrew [Macdonald] and I have been having quite serious conversations about it so it is a possibility.”

Fans have eagerly anticipated a third film to follow on from 2002’s ‘28 Days Later’ and 2007’s ‘28 Weeks Later, for which he wrote the former and was executive produced on the latter.

Garland hints that he’ll likely maintain a producing role rather than write the script, which will no doubt disappoint a number of fans after the success of his other screenplays such as ‘Dredd’. But with Danny Boyle in talks to return to direct it — a rumour that was dismissed a while back — the franchise could attract a new generation, as well as existing fans of ‘28 Days Later’, back to the fray.

In regards to getting the project moving, Garland expresses, “It’s complicated. There’s a whole bunch of reasons why it’s complicated, which are boring so I won’t go into,” as he describes the completion of the trilogy a real “possibility”.

And as for a confirmed title? Well, as every reader would likely agree, calling it ‘28 Months Later’ makes obvious, as well as chronological sense, at least. 

“It’s more likely to be ‘28 Months’ than ‘28 Years’” he said. “28 Years gives you one more place to go. 28 Decades is probably taking the piss.”

Regardless, this is great news for fans of the first two, which frightfully adapted the typical, slow-moving zombie into fast-sprinting, genuinely terrifying hoards.
