Angelina Jolie To Direct Captain Marvel?

It looks as though ‘Captain Marvel’ may be closing in on its director… and it’s apparently none other than Angelina Jolie. But do they really want her at the helm?

Although Marvel’s Phase Three is jam-packed full of enormous titles, ‘Captain Marvel’ is likely to be a game changer. After all, it will be Marvel’s first attempt at a female-centric comic book movie. But while DC spent months hunting for the perfect female director for ‘Wonder Woman’, it looks as though Marvel may be closing in on its first choice.

And that’s apparently Angelina Jolie.

According to OK! Magazine, the 39-year-old actress-turned-director has already been approached by Marvel Studios for the upcoming comic book movie… and have apparently offered her $20m for the job.

“Having a female director is a priority for them,” explained their source… and with DC working on a ‘Wonder Woman’ movie, it seems they’re up against stiff competition. But what does Jolie make of the offer?

“She never thought she’d be in such huge demand as a director,” they explained. “To be courted by Marvel after the Sony fiasco is a huge pat on the back.”

Of course, that last part refers to a series of e-mail leaked during the Sony hack, in which producer Scott Rudin made some rather strong remarks about her to Sony Pictures boss, Amy Pascal. Perhaps calling her a “minimally talented spoiled brat” wasn’t the best idea.

But is Marvel really keen to bring Jolie on board for ‘Captain Marvel’?

I can’t help thinking that they’re not the kind of company that resorts to stunt-casting, let alone stunt-crewing. And appointing Angelina Jolie as director of ‘Captain Marvel’ would be just that – bringing a big name on board in order to get the film noticed.

If you ask me, ‘Captain Marvel’ doesn’t really need that… and as such as important film in terms of female equality, I really think the film should stand on its own merit.

And then there’s the small matter of experience. Angeline Jolie has only directed two films in her career so far. Would a powerhouse like Marvel risk handing such an important project to a relative newcomer?

Whatever happens, the ‘Captain Marvel’ director will be under tremendous pressure to ensure the film is a hit. Could Angelina Jolie be the director to guarantee that? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

‘Captain Marvel’ heads to cinemas on 6 July 2018.
