Avengers Director: Thanos Not The Only Infinity War Villain

Every Marvel Studios film from ‘Iron Man’ in 2008 is building toward 'Avengers: Infinity War’ Part 1 and 2 in 2018 and 2019. As we already know, Josh Brolin as Thanos will be the villain - but 'Avengers: Age of Ultron’ director Joss Whedon believes he won’t be the only one.

While he doesn’t explain who else might be popping up to make life hell for Marvel’s superheroes, he does still have plenty to say.

“A lot of people were surprised that Thanos wasn’t the villains in Avengers 2, but he was never meant to be,” Whedon told Vulture reporter Kyle Buchanan. “He was always meant to be the puppet-master until he was done doing that, and then he’ll be the big villain they face off with.

"Not solely - I’m sure there’ll be plenty more [villains] in that monstrous epic, because one thing Marvel doesn’t do is string a story out into two movies that shouldn’t be two movies. They’ll give you two big movies. I feel like we got two movies into this one!”

Who might be the villain then? In the comics that will serve as inspiration for the tale, Dr Doom goes into business for himself to try and acquire Thanos’s Infinity Gauntlet himself. The rights for Doom are with 20th Century Fox and the 'Fantastic Four’ property, but could a character fill that role?

Perhaps Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, or a returning Hugo Weaving as Red Skull? The latter’s “demise” in 'Captain America: The First Avenger’ certainly leaves the door open for his return.

Whedon sadly won’t be back to write or direct either of the 'Infinity War’ movies. That responsibility is falling to 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ and 'Civil War’ directors Anthoy and Joe Russo, and writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Production on those films will begin in 2017.

'Infinity War: Part 1’ will be released on 27 April 2018, with 'Part 2’ following on 26 April 2019.
