Batman To Appear In DC’s Suicide Squad?

Rumours have emerged about the role that Ben Affleck’s Batman may play in the upcoming Warner Bros/DC movie ‘Suicide Squad.’

It isn’t necessarily the greatest revelation that Batman might have some role to play in the movie, given that it is set to hit cinemas in the wake of ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice,’ and that it is confirmed to feature at least two iconic villains originating in ‘Batman’ - The Joker (Jared Leto) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie).

Now, Instagram user Umberto Gonzalez claims to have some potentially spoiler-ish inside info on how the new Batman may fit into the offbeat team-up movie, centring on a motley crew of villains coerced into the service of the US government for Black Ops missions…

Says Gonzalez in typically colourful Instagram prose, “Details about THE GOD DAMN #BATMAN in#SUICIDESQUAD! #SPOILER #WARNING According to sources, in the film Batman is some sort of big boogeyman that the government REALLY hates. Get this, prior to the events in #BatmanvSuperman, THE JOKER is the only one to really ever meet him or know him and that’s why he’s so important to Amanda Waller (the government agent responsible for bringing the Suicide Squad together, to be portrayed by Viola Davis).

“They have footage of Batman in action which they watch. There is a bit of dialogue where they say Batman is the key to tracking down all “the supers.” Very cool stuff. #DC #DCCU#DCCOMICS #THEJOKER #AMANDAWALLER#THEDARKKNIGHTRETURNS”

Even if true, this by no means confirms that Ben Affleck’s Batman himself will appear in front of the camera in ‘Suicide Squad’ - but I would expect we’ll feel his presence one way or another.

It might well be an interesting twist to have the US government recruiting super-villains at least in part down to their mistrust of superheroes. Still, it might strain credibility just a little that no one but The Joker has even met Batman, considering that reports are he will be an older, semi-retired Dark Knight who’s been in the cape-wearing game for many years - thereby crossing paths with many criminals, and presumably at least a few cops (including one Jim Gordon).

Still, if Waller and co are especially concerned with tracking down ‘the supers,’ it would seem very clear - as if this was ever in doubt - that ‘Suicide Squad’ will follow on from ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ in paving the way to the ‘Justice League’ movies.

‘Suicide Squad’ hits UK cinemas on 5 August 2016 - just over four months after ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice,’ which lands on 25 March 2016.
