Cary Elwes Hints At Saw TV Series

Cary Elwes has implied that a TV spin-off of ‘Saw’ may be in the works, with his involvement.

The actor, who took the lead as Dr Gordon in James Wan’s notoriously nasty breakthrough movie ten years ago, appeared this weekend at the Scarefest Horror and Paranormal Convention in Lexington, Kentucky, where Dread Central caught up with him.

Some kind of ‘Saw’ revival has been rumoured to be on the cards for a while now. Asked whether he would be open to returning, Elwes replied, “Oh, absolutely,” but suggested this would depend on the series taking a different direction: “Like, say… a TV series.”

We’re told there was a knowing smile accompanying these words.

'Saw' hit cinemas at Halloween 2004. It proved a surprise box office smash, raking in over $103 million worldwide off the back of a $1.2 million production budget.

Naturally sequels followed, and the series proceeded to conquer the Halloween box office every year until 2010’s ‘Saw 3D’ (which saw Elwes return as Dr Gordon) brought things to a close.

As well as launching the careers of director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell - who have collaborated many times since, notably on the ‘Insidious’ films - ‘Saw’ was also hugely influential on the wave of ordeal-based horror, inelegantly dubbed ‘torture porn’ by the press, which became arguably the dominant horror subgenre of the 2000s.

A TV spin-off might not immediately seem the most obvious route for the series to take, but certainly not without precedent with the likes of ‘Hannibal,’ ‘Bates Motel’ and ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ on the small screen right now, and a TV version of ‘Scream’ also in the pipeline.

While we wait to hear anything more definitive on the matter, studio Lionsgate are set to mark the tenth anniversary of ‘Saw’ by re-releasing the original movie in US cinemas for one week this Halloween.
