Child's Play Creator Wants Chucky Vs Annabelle Movie

‘Child’s Play’ creator Don Mancini says he’d love to see Chucky team up with today’s most notorious horror movie doll, ‘Annabelle.’

The creepy doll of James Wan’s ‘The Conjuring,’ who has subsequently earned her own self-titled spin-off movie, is surely the biggest thing to happen in evil children’s toys since Chucky burst onto the scene in 1988.

Mancini, who has written all six ‘Child’s Play’ films to date as well as directing the most recent two (2004’s ‘Seed of Chucky’ and 2013’s ‘Curse of Chucky’), tells USA Today he’d love the two tiny terrors to join forces.

"I am hoping that at some future point we have Annabelle and Chucky team up… I can see that (even) in 20 years from now."

Mancini says he’d even be open to Annabelle appearing in the next ‘Chucky’ movie: “We would be into it, the only problem is that we are in different studios (New Line Cinema and Universal).

“That would probably be years worth of red tape to work it out. But if it all could be worked out, then yes, we’re very into it.”

Of course, Mancini notes that Chucky’s notoriously jealous (and, of course, psychotic) better half Tiffany (voiced by Jennifer Tilly) would not take kindly to another lady doll about the place:

“The bride of Chucky is going to be very upset if Chucky starts to stray. If I were Annabelle, I’d be watching my back.”

Yes – we’re fairly certain Mancini is just being glib here. Even so, ‘Child’s Play’ does share a common link with ‘Annabelle:’ the film’s director John R Leonetti was the director of photography on 1991’s ‘Child’s Play 3’ (and subsequently served the same position on ‘The Conjuring’).

Still, this isn’t the first time a ‘Child’s Play’ crossover movie has been proposed. Before New Line Cinema made ‘Freddy Vs Jason’ in 2003, a ‘Freddy Vs Chucky’ movie was mooted.

Mancini even had a vision for this, as he told the audience at last year’s Film4 FrightFest in London: “If Freddy and Chucky got together that would be a really funny double act. If you did a ‘Child’s Play on Elm Street’ and did it like a horror movie version of ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.’

“So Chucky and Freddy meet and Freddy says, ‘Chucky I’m a big fan of your work.’ Chucky says, ‘Freddy, I admire your technique.’ And they decide that Elm Street is too small for the two of them so they have to have a contest to see who can kill the most teenagers before sunrise.”

However, at the same event Mancini dismissed the notion of a ‘Chucky Vs. Leprechaun’ movie (a popular idea in horror fandom) as “too obvious.”

It seems unlikely we’ll be seeing a ‘Freddy Vs Chucky’ or a ‘Chucky Vs Annabelle’ anytime soon – but Mancini is currently working on the script for a seventh ‘Child’s Play’ movie.

Meanwhile, ‘Annabelle’ hits UK cinemas on 10 October, via New Line Cinema.
