A few pieces of news for the ‘Underworld’ fans out there: not only has its British star of the previous four films, Kate Beckinsale, signed up for the upcoming instalment, but Anna Foerster is confirmed to direct it.

Some had speculated whether Beckinsale would reprise her lead role of Selene, but now it’s official.

What’s more, it’s the first time a female director has taken charge of a film in the franchise, with Len Wiseman (husband of Beckinsale) helming the first two, Patrick Tatopoulos doing the third, and Måns Mårlind commanding the fourth.

Not that a woman directing a movie is anything new or rare, it means that herself and lead Beckinsale can hopefully offer audiences and existing fans a strong, empowering female hero.

At present, script writer Cory Goodman’s plot is under wraps, but it’s believed that the fifth ‘Underworld’ will focus on a younger generation of vampires and werewolves, with Theo James also reprising his role from 2012′s ‘Underworld: Awakening’.

‘Underworld 5′, as it’s currently known as, begins shooting in Prague this October.
