Gina Carano Joins Deadpool Cast

It looks as though ‘Deadpool’ is starting to assemble its cast, as Gina Carano joins the Merc With A Mouth… but what role will she play?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 32-year-old actress, model and MMA fighter has landed a role in the offbeat comic book movie.

“Gina Carano has closed a deal to join Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool, Fox’s action movie based on the wisecracking mercenary Marvel character,” they revealed. “Tim Miller is directing the action adventure project, which is eyeing a March start in Vancouver.”

But what role will Gina play?

“Carano will play a character known as Angel Dust,” they say. “It is unclear how she fits into the proceedings, but in the Marvel comics, the character was part of an underground mutant group known as The Morlocks.”

Of course, as a Marvel mutant, this seems to clearly tie Deadpool into the ‘X-Men’ franchise. But that’s not exactly a huge surprise. After all, Deadpool has crossed paths with Wolverine already in the critically panned ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’. But it seems that Angel Dust is going to be joined by a familiar face…

“T.J. Miller is set to bring comedic relief to the movie in an undisclosed role. And, fanboy alert: The Russian X-Men character known as Colossus is slated to appear in the movie.”

Obviously, fans will already be aware that Colossus has appeared throughout the ‘X-Men’ franchise played by Daniel Cudmore. Appearing in the role since ‘X2’, Daniel’s most recent appearance came in ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’.

And while it’s thought that he probably won’t appear in the upcoming ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ it seems he may get the chance to reprise the role in ‘Deadpool’.

But what does this mean for the Merc With A Mouth?

I can’t help thinking that Deadpool’s first solo outing will be in some way tied to the ‘X-Men’ movies… and perhaps that’s a smart move. After all, wider cinema-going audiences might not be familiar with the outspoken, off-the-wall character.

But will we see Deadpool head into the main ‘X-Men’ franchise? We’ll have to wait and see.

Either way, it looks as though his long-awaited solo debut is starting to take shape. And we can’t wait to see Ryan Reynolds back in the iconic costume.

‘Deadpool’ heads to cinemas on 12 February 2016.
