Has Indiana Jones 5 Just Been Accidentally Confirmed?

It could be that after ‘Star Wars VII’, Harrison Ford may be heading up into the loft to dust off his leather jacket, his fedora and his bullwhip.

It appears that the cinematographer Janusz Kaminski may have let slip that ‘Indiana Jones 5’ is his next project.

Considering that the very existence of ‘Indiana Jones 5’ is unconfirmed, it’s either wishful thinking on the part of the lensman, or maybe it is actually happening.

The news almost went unnoticed in an otherwise unrelated story posted by industry bible, Variety.

As part of an article on the announcement of an online filmmaking course featuring top cinematographers, including Kaminski, it drops the following information:

“Kaminski has made more than a dozen films with Steven Spielberg, earning two Oscars along the way. His credits include ‘Schindler’s List’, ‘Saving Private Ryan’ and ‘The Diving Bell & The Butterfly’. His next project is the upcoming fifth Indiana Jones movie.”

And there it is, in black and white.

Seemingly innocuous – and often pretty dry - industry news has always been a hotbed of scoops for those willing to wade through it.

And this is a great case in point, as picked up by readers of the movie blog Slashfilm, who spotted the news when the site linked to the Variety story as part of its regular news titbit round-up, Page 2.

Having bought up the rights to the Indy movies from Lucasfilm, along with ‘Star Wars’, Disney has been rumoured to be keen to want to reboot the series, but earlier this year such rumours – which included talk of Bradley Cooper stepping into Ford’s shoes – were said to be false.

Whether this adds more fuel to the fire – Ford himself is said to be keen to turn it out one more time – it’s not known, but one can’t help wondering why a film that doesn’t exist might have appointed a cinematographer.

The last movie in the series, ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’, arrived in 2008.

Though the reviews were good to mixed, it scored a robust £486 million at the box office.
