Kodi Smit-McPhee Cast As Young Nightcrawler in X-Men: Apocalypse

Another young actor has been added to ‘X-Men: Apocaylpse’ with Kodi-Smit-McPhee joining as Nightcrawler, the teleporting mutant played by Alan Cumming in ‘X-Men 2’.

Director Bryan Singer made the announcement through his Instagram.

Nightcrawler is just the latest member of the mutant team to be recast. Last month Sophie Turner joined as a young Jean Grey, Tye Sheridan joined as Cyclops and Alexandra Shipp was cast as Storm.

Those three characters had been rumoured to be part of the new movie - the third in the prequel series which started with Matthew Vaughn’s ‘X-Men: First Class’ in 2011 - so Nightcrawler comes as something of a surprise.

Smit-McPhee came to Hollywood’s attention when he starred alongisde Viggo Mortensen in post-apocalyptic Cormac McCarthy-adaptation ‘The Road’. More recently he read picture books with an orangutan in last year’s ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’.

Nightcrawler meanwhile is an X-Men regular who starred in one of the movie series’ stand-out scenes - ‘X-Men 2’s attack on the White House.

James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence return as Professor X, Magneto and Mystique, as well as Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Nicholas Hoult as Beast.

They younger cast who replaced the stars of Bryan Singer’s original films (accept Jackman as the slow-ageing Logan) will be battling Apocalypse, an ancient and powerful mutant to be played by rising start Oscar Isaac.

'X-Men: Apocalypse' is set for release on 19 May 2016.
