MTV Confirms Scream TV Series

A TV show based on the ‘Scream’ movies has been officially picked up to go to series at MTV.

It has been known for some time that a TV series based on the hit 1990s slasher series was in the works in the TV wing of Dimension Films, but this is the first confirmation that it will go beyond the pilot episode.

The first season will run for 10 episodes, and is scheduled to premiere in October 2015. However, just how closely related the show will be to the movies remains unclear.

For starters, as an MTV production (subject to US network TV rules), the TV show naturally won’t be able to get quite as gruesome or foul-mouthed as the movies.

We can probably anticipate tone and content similar to MTV’s ‘Teen Wolf’ series. Doubtless this will please some viewers, whilst perhaps frustrating some fans of the original series.

However, it was recently reported that the iconic Ghost Face mask - the most recognisable image from the ‘Scream’ movies - may not be featured in the show.

This comes on top of earlier hints from producer Harvey Weinstein that there may be a supernatural element this time around, which was never present in the films.

Factor in how far caller ID technology has come since those first threatening phone calls were made in the original 1996 film, and we may be left wondering whether this show will have anything in common with ‘Scream’ at all beyond the name.

Small screen spin-offs of well-known horror properties are becoming more and more commonplace of late, with some proving very popular (‘Hannibal,’ ‘Bates Motel’), others a bit less so (‘Dracula,’ ‘From Dusk Till Dawn: the Series’). Guess we’ll have to wait until this time next year to see how ‘Scream’ will turn out.

As Deadline report, this announcement comes more than a year after MTV originally ordered the pilot episode. The showrunner is Jill Blotevogel, who also rewrote the Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin’s pilot script which was directed by Jamie Travis.

Harvey and Bob Weinstein, producers of the ‘Scream’ movies, are executive producers along with original director Wes Craven. The cast includes Bex Taylor-Klaus, Audrey Jensen, Willa Fitzgerald, John Karna, Connor Weil, Amadeus Serafini, Carlson Young, Tracy Middendorf and Joel Gretsch.

'Scream' creator Kevin Williamson has no involvement, and at present there do not seem to be any plans for original stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette or Courtney Cox to appear.
