Simon Kinberg Teases Fantastic Four Details

After the rather impressive ‘Fantastic Four’ teaser trailer, writer Simon Kinberg teases some details from the movie… and it sounds even cooler than we thought.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, ‘The Fantastic Four’ writer Simon Kinberg teased details about the upcoming superhero film… and Doctor Doom’s transformation into a super villain.

“Part of what’s cool about the Fantastic Four comics is that there’s an emphasis on the science of science fiction,” he explained. “And we treat what would normally be considered a superpower as a trauma. They don’t just go up a roof, jump off, and start swinging through the city. It’s the opposite. What would happen if your body transformed, and you didn’t have control over it?”

Of course, this much is evident from the recently released trailer. It’s clearly not a pleasant experience… especially for poor old Ben Grimm who ends up as a smouldering pile of rock. But things are apparently just as bad for Victor Domashev – this film’s version of Doctor Doom.

“He has aspirations and struggles that are a little bit more classically tragic than the other characters,” explains Kinberg. “As much as it’s an origin story of our heroes, it also tracks how someone can become a villain.”

Assumed to transform along with the Fantastic Four during the unfortunate experiment which goes awry, it looks as though Doom will be an interesting foil for our heroes. And might even be a bit more sympathetic than your average comic book villain.

Of course, The Fantastic Four isn’t the only comic book franchise that Fox currently owns… but could we see them cross over with the X-Men eventually?

“The reboot of FanFour really needed to work in and of itself,” he says… and that explains why they’re not rushing into a crossover event anytime soon. “We were doing something pretty radical with the tone of the movie. If we wanted to find a way to connect them to the X-Men, we could. There’s a lot of precedent from the comics.”

The trouble is in how they manage the merger. A group of super-powered scientists doesn’t seem all that strange in a world where mutants can read people’s minds and command metal objects at will. But I get the feeling that Fox will eventually give it a shot.

But for now, it looks as though the ‘Fantastic Four’ are on their own… and might even meet their match when it comes to Doctor Doom.

‘The Fantastic Four’ heads to cinemas on 6 August 2015.
