Sony Considering Adult Spider-Man & Kraven's Last Hunt For Reboot

Two more potential ideas for the future of the Spider-Man series surfaced last night, following more leaks from Sony Pictures.

A long list of potential directors to take charge of future films has also been detailed in new email exchanges.

The Daily Beast have unearthed an eight page document discussing plans to reboot Spider-Man yet again, but follow the character as an adult. Another idea proposed is an adaptation of famous comic story Kraven’s Last Hunt.

The lengthy email comes are between former Warner Bros. chief Jeff Robinov, who is now head of Studio 8, which has a deal with Sony and Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal.

In Robinov’s email to Pascal, he first describes what makes Spider-Man such a great hero, likening his stature and situation to James Bond.

"To argue that there’s plenty of other superhero movies with levity in the marketplace, so why make more ‘Spider-Man’ movies, would be akin to saying there’s no room for James Bond films because of all the espionage films and franchises that have come out over the years. There will always be room for this beloved, iconic hero," he said.

Robinov then rather sensibly adds: “In the next ‘Spider-Man’ movies, we can’t go back to his origin story. Think of the 25 films in the James Bond franchise; just because a new creative team comes aboard, and breathes new life into a classic property, doesn’t mean the origin story has to be retold.”

Most fans would whole-heartedly agree.

In regard to Kraven’s Last Hunt he points out that in 2013 readers of Comic Book Resources voted it the best Spider-Man story ever.

"In it," he explains, "Kraven the Hunter tracks down Spider-Man, shoots him repeatedly, and leaves him for dead, buried underground. He then dons a Spider-Man costume and savagely starts attacking criminals.

"What makes this story resonate with fans is that it proves it takes more than just the costume to become “Spider-Man.” No matter what he’s wearing, or what predicament he’s facing, Peter Parker is sensitive, passionate, and connected to those he’s interacting with in a very powerful way."

Robinov says exploring Spider-Man as an adult would be “interesting” because “Spidey hasn’t remained a teenager over the 52 years he’s been around. He’s moved in with his girlfriend, gotten married, and in some storylines, even became a science teacher at a high school.

"It might feel fresh to see Peter Parker juggling with adult issues."

If nothing else, Robinov has been revealed to be a pretty big Spider-Man fan.

A list of prospective directors for the future of the series was also uncovered. Included among them were obvious candidates there due to recent high-profile successes (Chris Buck & Jennifer Lee of ‘Frozen’ fame, Phil Lord & Chris Miller from ‘The LEGO Movie’, James Gunn of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’) and more interesting choices like ‘Whiplash’ director Damien Chazelle, ‘Attack the Block’s Joe Cornish and Don Hall & Chris Williams from ‘Big Hero 6’.

Sony are believed to be holding a “Spider-Man Summit” in January to discuss the future of the series. ‘Sinister Six’, ‘Venom and an all-girl team-up movie are just three of the spin-off ideas for the troubled franchise.

It was also recently revealed that Marvel Studios had held talks with Sony Pictures regarding a power-sharing agreement that would bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside The Avengers.
