Star Wars 7 Officially Titled The Force Awakens

'Star Wars 7' has wrapped and the official title is:

The full title ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, was revealed by the official ‘Star Wars’ social accounts, with the Twitter post from @StarWars reading: “Star Wars: The Force Awakens has completed principal photography. #StarWarsVII #TheForceAwakens”.

It’s thought ‘Episode VII’ finished principle photography late last week as the filmmakers attended a huge wrap party at the Science Museum in London over the weekend, and this just confirms our suspicions.

Early reports suggesting the title would be ‘A New Dawn’, ‘Return of the Sith’, or ‘Rise of the Jedi’ now seem fairly wide of the mark.

Interestingly, LucasFilm seem to have dropped the ‘Episode VII’ entirely, probably to draw attention away from the sheer number of films in the series so far, to make it a more inviting prospect to franchise newcomers.

It also reflects the current trend in Hollywood to steer clear of numbered sequels - see ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ etc.

This is the first ‘Star Wars’ film in the franchise to directly reference the Force, the mythical power that Jedis and Sith draw their strength from and (to get a little bit geeky) it follows the trend of the first ‘Star Wars’ films in the trilogy having three words in their title - ‘A New Hope’ and ‘The Phantom Menace’.

What can be gleaned from the title? Very little until we see a trailer, but it does suggest that the Rebels victory at the end of ‘Return of the Jedi’ didn’t bring everlasting peace to the galaxy after all.
