Sad news ‘Frozen’ fans.

Despite plans for a stage musical and the forthcoming animated short ‘Frozen Fever’ - which debuts with ‘Cinderella' later this month - 'Frozen' directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck say they're not currently working on a sequel to their hit animated sensation.

"It’s been in the press that we are doing [a sequel], and we would ask each other, ‘Are we?’" Buck told Buzzfeed. “They’d have a date and they’d have a cast and it was like, OK…”

This seemingly puts the bed the rumours that began back in November 2014 when the film’s star Idina Menzel told the Telegraph that a sequel was “in the works”.

Jennifer Lee refuses to rule out a proper sequel in the future though, after all, ‘Frozen’ recently became Disney’s third most successful animated feature of all time.

"It all comes down to the story," Lee says. "Like with the short [‘Frozen Fever’], it was so daunting until we found the story. Then it was all of the things it usually is and we were thinking of every emotion and moment and feeling. I think that’s all we can do. Until we find our way into what’s next, emotionally, it will feel too big. We just finished the short two weeks ago. One year ago, it was a lot to even think about doing a short. We were quite tired. We don’t really know what it’s like to stop for a minute and think about what we want to do next."

Next up for Lee is the planned Broadway version of the Disney musical, which she reveals the extended running time will allow her to flesh out the story of Elsa, Anna and co. even more.

"The shaping of Frozen lends itself beautifully to [the stage]," Lee said. "We’re just getting started, so there’s not a lot of details yet — not that I could say anything if there was. But there are so many great things that in the scope of a 90-minute [film] you can’t do, emotional parts of the story you can’t draw out. And a musical is perfect for that. Everyone’s very excited for the potential for what we could do. I’m really excited about it."

'Frozen Fever' will arrive in cinemas attached to the start of 'Cinderella' on Friday, 27 March.
