Winter Soldier Returns In Captain America: Civil War

It looks as though the Winter Soldier will return in the upcoming ‘Captain America: Civil War’… but how will Bucky Barnes fit into things?

Ever since ‘Civil War’ was first announced, Marvel fans have wondered whether or not Cap’s old friend Bucky Barnes would return. Of course, the events of ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ led to him going AWOL… but it looks as though he’s set to return in true comic book fashion.

But what does this mean for Cap?

During an interview with Sina, the Russo brothers – directors of the upcoming ‘Captain America’ sequel – revealed that the Winter Soldier will return, amongst others…

“We’ve been preparing for the movie since the last one debuted last year,” said Anthony Russo. “So, we’ve been working on it for a long time now. We’re very happy how it’s coming along. Captain America 3 is gonna be called Captain America: Civil War and it’s going to star Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson will be back, Winter Soldier [Sebastian Stan] will be back, and Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man will also be joining us in the next film.”

Of course, this is great news for fans of Bucky Barnes as well as the Black Widow… but how exactly will he tie into the events of Civil War?

Unfortunately, that remains a bit of a mystery. And when asked what new elements ‘Civil War’ will bring, Joe Russo revealed nothing except the obvious.

“The new element in this film is that Captain America and Iron Man get into a fight with each other,” he explained. Well… yeah. But unfortunately, it looks as though the Marvel directors will remain tight-lipped for now.

Obviously, fans of the ‘Civil War’ comic book will know that Bucky Barnes eventually takes over the mantle of Captain America after the death of Steve Rogers. But will Marvel Studios go down this route on the big screen?

It’s no secret that Chris Evans – who plays Captain America – won’t be sticking around forever. In fact, it’s said that his contract with Marvel Studios is nearing its an end… and perhaps that means a search for the next man to pick up Cap’s shield.

But will that be Bucky Barnes? For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but the fact that he’s appearing in ‘Civil War’ could be a good sign.

‘Captain America: Civil War’ heads to cinemas on 29 April 2016.
