X-Men: Apocalypse Director Reveals First Look At Nightcrawler

It looks as though Kodi Smit-McPhee has already started to suit up for the upcoming ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’… as Bryan Singer reveals our first look at a young Nightcrawler.

Appearing on Instagram, the director of ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ revealed this first look at the enigmatic ‘X-Men’ character, not long before it began to appear on the film’s official Twitter.

“First day on set! Here is @kodismitmcpheee as #Nightcrawler. Catch him before he’s gone.…”

Known for his ability to teleport, as well as superhuman agility and a prehensile tail, the mutant Nightcrawler is a fan favourite when it comes to the comic books… and he’s certainly no stranger when it comes to the films.

Of course, Nightcrawler – otherwise known as Kurt Wagner – last appeared in ‘X2’ played by none other than British thesp, Alan Cumming. And while the Marvel mutant’s skin colour hasn’t exactly changed much, it seems young Nightcrawler is a lot different to his older counterpart.

For one thing, there’s the lack of full-body tattooing…

Explained in the movie that Wagner had one tattoo for every sin he had committed, it’s clear that we’re meeting him long before any of that… if it ever happens at all.

But that’s not the only change – after all, Kodi Smit-McPhee’s version is a lot younger than Cumming’s earlier portrayal… and that’s reflected in the kid’s costume.

Sporting a blue and red jacket, it’s clear that the new look takes a lot of inspiration from the comic books – in fact, it seems to specifically reference the character’s comic book costume. And that’s definitely a good thing.

But how will Nightcrawler fit into the events of ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’?

At the moment, we’re unsure… and after the events of ‘Days of Future Past’ it looks as though anything is possible. After all, he should meet the ‘X-Men’ for a good few years according to the original timeline of the series. But that all seems to have gone out the window.

Either way, it looks as though the teleporting mutant is set to return… and so far, I can’t help thinking that his unique powers are going to impress the fans.

Let’s just hope it’s more than a Quicksilver-style cameo.

‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ heads to cinemas on 19 May 2016.
