Christopher Nolan: Directing Star Wars 7 Takes 'Colossal Balls'

Christopher Nolan has addressed whether or not he was ever approached or interested in directing ‘Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens’.

In an interview with The Daily Beast the director of ‘Interstellar’, said he would be “afraid to touch” such a huge franchise and said J.J. Abrams taking on the job took “colossal balls”.

“I’m pretty excited to see what J.J. is going to do with that,” he said. “I’m excited to see that he’s shooting on film and actually built the Millennium Falcon. As far as whether or not I would have ever done it, the truth is I think I’d be afraid to touch it! He’s boldly going where he went before in Star Trek, and it takes colossal balls.”

It’s only natural that Nolan would be interested in Abrams’ practical effects and use of film stock, as these are filmmaking elements Nolan has championed for some time. He also champions the IMAX format, which is also part of Disney and Abrams’ ‘Star Wars 7’ plans.

“I’m a lot more comfortable trying to do my own thing than carrying the weight and expectation of the entire world - particularly 40-somethings like me who live and die with each new bit of information about ‘Star Wars’,” Nolan continued. “I’m very excited to see what he does.”

‘Star Wars’ was a big influence on the director, who in ‘Interstellar’ has released his first true sci-fi. ‘Inception’ could be classified as sci-fi if you really wanted it to be.

‘Interstellar’ is in cinemas now, ‘Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens’ will arrive on 18 December 2015.
