Dean Israelite In Talks To Direct Power Rangers Film

‘Project Almanac’ director Dean Israelite is being lined up to take control of the new ‘Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers’ movie, it has emerged.

According to The Wrap, the filmmaker impressed the right people on his last project whereby he got great results out of his young cast on ‘Project Almanac’, but is also a massive ‘Power Rangers’ fan.

The new film was first announced last September and already has a script written by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, both previously having teamed up to write ‘Thor’ and ‘X-Men: First Class’.

‘Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers’ first debuted in 1993 in what quickly became a phenomenally popular TV series across the globe. Since then there have been numerous shows since its initial three year run which have spanned over the past 22 years. There’s also been a few films to speak of, including 1995′s ‘Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Movie’, which did rather well at the box office. This was followed by ‘Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie’, in the hope of launching the new TV series, but wasn’t as successful as they’d hoped.

The new movie, due out in 2016, comes at an interesting time for the franchise. Only a few months ago Joseph Kahn directed an unofficial short film called ‘Power/Rangers’, which was a violent, adult version of the series. It went viral and got a lot of people excited, but it’s unlikely that Israelite will be able to go as dark and graphic as that when he helms the new instalment.

One of its co-creators, Haim Saban, is producing the 2016 film from Saban Brands and Lionsgate, so expect them to be pushing for a new, fresh take on the franchise, not to mention the merchandise…
