Disney’s Live-action Mulan Is On The Way

With the success of a number of animation to live-action adaptations, Disney is set to bring ‘Mulan’ to life.

The Hollywood Reporter claim that Disney has already purchased a script from writing duo Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek, focusing on Chinese heroine Hua Mulan, the character who also forms the lead in the 1998 animated movie.

‘We’re The Millers’ Chris Bender and J.C. Spink are producing the project for the Mouse House, and frankly the news is no surprise considering the studio’s recent decisions, but it’s exciting going on Disney’s recent trend.

Having already created live-action versions of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and the Angelina Jolie-starring ‘Maleficent’, their most recent cinema hit, ‘Cinderella’, has comfortably tipped the $335 million mark, with ‘Beauty and The Beast’ and ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ on the way too.

Disney scooped over $300 million in box office takings back in ‘98 when they released ‘Mulan’ in cinemas, with a sequel in 2004 going straight-to-DVD.

With the news of this live-action film only just announced, there are no other details in regards to who’ll direct or star, but it’ll likely attract a host of well known names.

But do we need another Disney film adapting?

Personally, I didn’t find ‘Alice in Wonderland’ or the recent ‘Cinderella’ to be all that. Sure, Tim Burton’s vision for re-imagining the former’s traditional story was interesting, but totally lacked anything in terms of a narrative, whereas Kenneth Branagh’s ‘Cinderella’ wasn’t so much a re-imagining, but more of a straight forward update, which offers nothing new. Hopefully whoever takes the reins on ‘Mulan’ will be able to deliver something faithful but also fresh and appealing.
