First Pacific Rim 2 Plot Details Revealed

Guillermo del Toro has let slip a few hints at what we can expect story-wise in the upcoming sequel to his 2013 monsters versus robots movie ‘Pacific Rim.’

Though divisive among fans and critics alike, and not quite the mega-blockbuster that Warner Bros and Legendary Entertainment had banked on it being, ‘Pacific Rim’ performed well enough commercially (particularly in Asia) for a follow-up film to get the go-ahead.

Ever ambitious, director del Toro has already declared this upcoming second film will pave the way for a third - and now he has given Collider some brief indication of how the saga of the Kaiju and the Jaegers will continue. (Be warned there will be moderate spoilers for ‘Pacific Rim’ ahead.)

Anyone who has seen ‘Pacific Rim’ will be aware that any sequel faces a fairly significant hurdle, as the climax of the film saw the Breach - the interdimensional gateway between Earth and the Kaiju world - blown up and sealed shut, presumably for good. Subsequently, the sequel will introduce us to a new post-war world.

Says del Toro: “It’s a few years after the first one.  It’s not an immediate follow-up.  It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after – what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat.  It’s quite a jump.”

Del Toro also promises the return of Charlie Day and Burn Gorman as the scientists studying the Kaiju, and suggests that these characters - largely comic relief in the first film - may take centre stage this time around.

“Yes.It’s quite a different movie from the first one in that, but I think that two of our main characters like in the first one are Burn and Charlie. They are really, really – I mean, honestly, they are probably the guys I have the most fun writing along with [Ron Perlman’s character] Hannibal Chau so just from a purely selfish drive, I like writing them.

"I love writing for Charlie and Burn.  I mean, [Burn’s] in ‘Crimson Peak’for that reason, because I love working with him.  You’re gonna get a lot of that, but the Kaijus are very different and you’re gonna see a very different type of the robots I think.  It’s gonna be quite a different adventure.”

Del Toro makes no mention of what will have become of the heroic Jaeger pilots Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi, but it would seem a foregone conclusion that they too will return - and we rather suspect the time will come that they need to get back in that giant robot and butt heads with an alien monster or two.

Del Toro’s ‘Crimson Peak’ (which also reunites the director with Charlie Hunnam as well as Burn Gorman) is set to open in October 2015 - around about the time that ‘Pacific Rim 2’ is set to go into production, with a view to hitting cinemas in April 2017.
