Prisoners Writer 'Courted' For Universal's Wolfman Reboot

'Prisoners' screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski is being 'courted' by Universal to script their planned reboot of 'The Wolf Man,' a report has claimed.

It has been known for a while that Universal are working on a revival of their classic monster movie characters, with a view to them crossing over Marvel-style in their own cinematic universe - and as such, a new ‘Wolf Man’ movie was inevitable at some point.

However, it is unclear right now whether or not ‘The Wolf Man’ is the mystery monster movie which Universal recently announced would be released in 2017.

The claim comes almost as an aside in a report at Deadline; reporter Mike Fleming Jr says, “I’m hearing that Prisoners scribe Aaron Guzikowski is being courted to get the Wolf Man howling again, after Uni rebooted The Mummy.”

A new take on ‘The Mummy,’ set to mark the directorial debut of writer/producer Alex Kurtzman, is scheduled for 2016. This film is intended to really get the ball rolling on the new Universal monsterverse, after this year’s ‘Dracula Untold’ pointed the way toward it.

The original ‘Wolf Man’ movie, starring Lon Chaney Jr, was released in 1941 (although Universal had made an earlier werewolf movie, ‘Werewolf of London,’ in 1935).

Chaney would reprise the role in Universal’s original crossover movies: ‘Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man,’ ‘House of Frankenstein,’ ‘House of Dracula’ and ‘Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.’

We had previously suggested that ‘The Wolf Man’ would not be the most likely candidate to come up on Universal’s monsterverse schedule just yet, given it’s only been four years since the studio last took the property on in the troubled 2010 movie from director Joe Johnston, which starred Benico del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt.

However, if Deadline’s claims are accurate, we might yet have to eat our words…
