'Guardians of the Galaxy' has been nominated in the Best Adapted Screenplay category at the Writer’s Guild of America awards .

Perlman wrote the script’s first draft before Gunn came into rewrite it. His rewirtes added Michael Rooker’s character Yondu and Star Lord’s (Chris Pratt) mixtape, which formed a crucialpart of the film’s plot and success.

Often award shows are full of a mix of the same awards-season frontrunners - which this year includes ‘Boyhood’, ‘Foxcatcher’ and ‘Birdman’, so to see not just a blockbuster, but a superhero comedy blockbuster get recognition is incredibly refreshing.

The film’s success is a testament to every aspect of it, not least its hilarious script - which drew audiences in with its laughs, but gave that same audience reason to care and emphasise with the colourful cast of characters.

Best Original Screenplay is the main WGA award of the night, and that will be contested by the scripts for ‘Boyhood’, ‘Whiplash’, ‘Nightcrawler’, ‘Boyhood’ and ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’.

'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' is currently being written by James Gunn, who returns to direct the sequel for release in April 2017.
