Star Wars: Episode VII’s Stormtrooper Design Leaked

Staying spoiler-free for the release of ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ 18 months from now is becoming increasingly difficult as minor plot details and leaked images begin to emerge.

Thanks to entertainment blog Indie Revolver, it seems we’ve been given our first look at the Stormtrooper helmet design for JJ Abrams’ forthcoming sequel.

It’s worth noting that we know that ‘Episode VII’ will definitely feature Stormtroopers as Kevin Smith confirmed their presence in the film earlier this year. He’d been given an exclusive set visit by Abrams and he spilled the beans on his podcast, so this “leak” seems feasible.

Warning, spoilers coming up…

Indie Revolver has posted what it claims to be three images of Stormtrooper helmet designs.

The first appears to be concept art, but it could be a photo – it’s hard to tell.

They say: “The helmet is not symmetrical – there’s only one breather/vent on the bottom near the mouth, on his left side. The black “mouth” area under the white nose plate appears to be a cloth/mesh (which you can better see in the detail shot below). The eye lenses are still separate, but set into a black frame to connect them and give the illusion of one single piece.”

This cool-looking design was then backed up by another photo (courtesy of fan forum The RPF) which appears to show a real-life version of the same helmet, on a table with numerous other helmets of the same design.

This looks like it was leaked directly from the film’s prop store. JJ will not be happy.

These seem legitimate to us and they back up an image which appeared on Instagram earlier this week, which claimed to be of the new Stormtrooper helmet design which was much sleeker than we’d seen before.

The third image is much more intriguing and looks vastly different to previous Stormtrooper helmet designs.

Indie Revolver says: “A couple people have referred to this as a “Jungle Trooper,” but I have a few good reasons to believe that this is actually an update to the Empire Strikes Back’s Snowtrooper. This new helmet has a flared dome and a single thin horizontal eyepiece to it and appears to have a removable face mask.”

It’s unclear where this photo was taken, but it looks like it could in the desert, so it may have come from the Abu Dhabi set earlier this year.

Both designs seem to be a natural progression from the Stormtrooper designs of the original trilogy, and if you ask us, they’re already a million times better than the Clone Trooper helmet design of the prequel trilogy. After all, the new film is set 30 years after the events of ‘Return of the Jedi’ so you would expect designs to have changed in the intervening years.

But if the Empire was defeated at the end of ‘Episode 6’, just who exactly are the new Stormtroopers working for now? We’ll find out when the film is released on 18 December, 2015.

What do you think? Do they seem legitimate to you? Do you like the new design?
