Rumour: First Star Wars 7 The Force Awakens Trailer Attached To The Hobbit

After plenty of speculation about when we’ll see the first ‘Star Wars VII’ trailer, it looks as though it may be heading our way this December attached to ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’.

According to theatre owner Reece Steel, he had a chat with ‘Star Wars VII’ assistant director Thomas Gormley who revealed that the highly-anticipated trailer for ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ will be coming with the final instalment of ‘The Hobbit’.

Although the folks at Star Wars 7 News broke the story almost immediately, it looks as though the Twitter account in question has since been deleted. But while we quickly assumed that it may have been an imposter, it looks as though the account was created back in 2012.

And with over 4000 tweets and a couple of hundred followers, it seems there’s no reason to doubt that this was in fact a real person. But whether or not he has his information correct is another matter entirely.

That said, there are some compelling reasons to believe that this might be the case…

For one thing, Thomas Gormley is a frequent collaborator of J.J. Abrams and could easily be in the loop when it comes to such big news. Sure, marketing isn’t exactly the kind of job that an assistant director will be involved with… but as a friend and colleague, he could be told all about the huge, impending news.

Also, according to the folks at Slashfilm, we already know that Peter Jackson – director of ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy – has visited the set of ‘Star Wars VII’. It’s a tenuous connection at best, but it’s easy to see that Abrams and Jackson could well be buddies… and that might well be a compelling enough reason to attach the trailer to his upcoming film.

Of course, an even bigger reason wold be to establish ‘Star Wars’ as a Christmas movie a year in advance of its release… and with subsequent movies expected around the same time of year, it’s an excellent early marketing strategy to place the film around the holiday season.

Whether or not the trailer finds itself attached to ‘The Hobbit’ remains to be seen. But I can’t help thinking it would be a good move from Disney and Lucasfilm, and will likely appeal to the exact same audience. Let’s just see how it all pans out…

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ will head to cinemas on 18 December 2015.
