Scarlett Johansson Talks Black Widow Role In Captain America 3

In the Marvel cinematic universe Scarlett Johansson is the definition of a team player. As Black Widow, Johansson has emphatically built up the superhero’s reputation and character all while simply being a supporting figure in a number of films.

‘Iron Man 2′, ‘The Avengers’ and ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ would have wilted without her presence, and big things are expected of her in both ‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’ and ‘Captain America: Civil War’.

But with Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man joining the already packed ensemble for ‘Civil War’ the question now being asked is what sort of role will Johansson take in the blockbuster? Well, Johansson has told IGN that the third ‘Captain America’ film will involve Black Widow trying to escape that past that has repeatedly haunted her.

“I think her past will always haunt her,” Johansson explained. “She’s trying to move forward; she’s trying to pick up the pieces. I think we’ll see that in ‘Cap Three’ when we find her. She has a greater purpose, and I think that greater purpose is charged by this need to escape her past. So it’s always looming over her shoulder.”

We can probably expect some of these aspects of her past to come to the fore in ‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’, while the trailers have also teased that she will grow closer with Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner/The Hulk in the hugely anticipated sequel.

Despite her sparse screen-time, Johansson has firmly established herself as a integral member of the Avengers team, and she has been able to wrestle scenes away from the likes of Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and Captain America with her indomitable presence.

There have long been calls for Black Widow to get her own solo movie. And while it’s true that Marvel would probably excel exploring the character even further, the fact that Johansson has proven just how invaluable she is to their universe in her current guise means that the studio would be silly risking what they’ve got when there are so many other tales that they want to tell.

You can catch up with Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow when ‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’ is released in the United Kingdom from Thursday night.
