The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies: Billy Connolly Reveals Epic New Details

Billy Connolly has revealed some new details about ‘The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies’ – and it sounds epic.

The comedian stars as Dain II Ironfoot in the threequel, which will bring Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth adaptation to an end.

“I watched all my dwarf friends coming down the river in barrels and they were actually doing it,” Connolly tells Yahoo. “They’d made a river and [there were] real barrels…I was scared, it was astonishing.”

Describing the titular conflict which forms the centerpiece of the final film, he adds, “It’s hair-raising. It’s actually quite frightening to do. The sheer noise of it, when they’re all attacking us, noises that are foreign to you.”

The star explains that Jackson pipes in the sounds of the enemy onto the green screen set. “It gets the reaction from you,” says the actor.

Connolly also says he will be speaking Dwarfish in his Glaswegian accent and that he learned the bizarre dialect on-set before performing it straight away and forgetting it instantly.

Talking about the look of his character – a famous dwarf who eventually becomes King Under The Mountain – Connolly explains, “It’s like wearing a Volkswagen. [It took] three hours a day [to apply]. “Can you imagine, having your face stuck on? It’s extraordinary the way I look. My eyebrows have got braids in them, jewellery in my beard, tattoos on my forehead. If you’re standing and you’ve got iron boots on and a big axe, it gives you a certain cachet. You’re not going to say, ‘excuse me, can you tell me the time, please?’”

The Scottish star is currently appearing in British comedy ‘What We Did On Our Holiday’, in which he plays a terminally ill grandfather alongside David Tennant and Rosamund Pike.

And let’s hope he likes the fans of that movie more than the Tolkien aficionados who are over-excited about him playing Dain.

“When I was younger I used to meet ‘Lord Of The Rings’ people and I always disliked them,” he admits. “Always talking about ginks and gonks and googlewooglies – get the f**k out of the my face.”

To be fair, he does take more care than he used to. “They come up with the big leatherbound versions of [the book],” he says. “You have to do a really nice autograph because it’s forever. It’s not like a brochure they throw in the corner.”

‘What We Did On Our Holiday’ is in cinemas now, while ‘The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies’ is released on 12 December.
