The Rock Says Shazam Still Hasn’t Been Cast

It looks as though DC’s Shazam still hasn’t been cast… and the script is still up in the air.

During an interview with MTV News, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson – who is set to play Black Adam in ‘Shazam’ – revealed that the titular hero hasn’t yet been chosen.

“No, we haven’t picked a Shazam yet,” he said. “And we have been working on the script. Half the scripts [have] already come in. Fantastic, very excited about it.”

Of course, ‘Shazam’ is one of DC’s weirder properties. Following young Billy Batson – a boy who can transform into the titular superhero by uttering the word ‘shazam’ – it’s easy to see why Warner Bros. might need to take their time to get this one right.

And the fact that Shazam hasn’t been cast yet isn’t very surprising. After all, with a release date of 5 April 2017, they have plenty of time to look.

But will they get the same actor to play Billy Batson and Shazam?

Although the likes of ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ used CGI trickery to allow Chris Evans to play a vastly different version of himself, I can’t help thinking that casting different actors in these roles would really pay off.

Think of it as a Tom Hanks in ‘Big’ situation… but with super powers.

Either way, it looks as though The Rock is very keen to get stuck into the villainous role of Black Adam… but he reiterates that this is all part of a journey. And Black Adam might end up seeing the error of his ways.

“What I’m really excited about is — because, again, I’ve lived with this character, and this opportunity for almost 10 years now, so it’s like, in my DNA! I’m like a little kid, and it’s the opportunity to create his journey, but that journey has to start out properly.”

“And starting off properly is [Black Adam] not being a hero. That’s got to be earned, so he starts off as a slave. And he’s pissed off, and people are going to pay. But eventually down the line he’ll become an anti-hero.”

‘Shazam’ heads to cinemas on 5 April 2017.
