Sony Renew Interest In Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Trilogy

Since David Fincher’s adaptation of ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’, there’s been little to speak of in terms of a sequel, but one could be on the cards if Sony have anything to say about it.

With a new novel on the horizon – a fourth instalment called ‘The Girl in the Spider’s Web’, written by David Lagercrantz – it’s believed that Amy Pascal (formerly of Sony) had a deal in place to not only to make the sequels, but already in possession of the rights to the fourth, too.

Fincher’s English remake of ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ was a moderate hit, taking $233 million worldwide, but with its $90 million budget and lukewarm public reception to take into account, it didn’t seem like another was likely.

With the new book due out in August, it appears that there’s now renewed interest in the series, suggesting that the second and third books (’The Girl Who Played with Fire’ and ‘The Girl That Kicked the Hornet’s Nest’) will combine into one film as a sequel to the 2011 film, with ‘The Girl in the Spider’s Web’ serving as the third film in the trilogy.

Apparently Sony are keen on making this happen because they’ve already negotiated the rights (when Pascal was in charge) and, in the instance of the material for the sequel, have paid a large sum acquiring the rights to make it into a movie.

It’s unknown whether director David Fincher and its stars Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara will return though. If not, it’d mean new faces cast for Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist in the continued roles.
