Marvel News Round Up: Whedon On Avengers 3, Gunn Teases Groot’s Death And More

Joss Whedon has been on something of a rampage this week. Not only has he been accusing the superhero movie industry of being bona-fide sexists but he also declared that Fox own all of Marvel’s best female characters too.

That’s not all. He’s also pretty much revealed that he won’t direct ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ too. But it isn’t just Joss Whedon who has been discussing Marvel and its movies fervently.

The likes of Robert Downey Jr., Ewan McGregor and James Gunn have also been providing updates and insight to the likes of ‘Captain America: Civil War’, ‘Doctor Strange’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2’.

It’s been a pretty hectic week all round really.

Joss Whedon Probably Won’t Direct Avengers: Infinity War

Bad luck all you Joss Whedon fanatics out there, because the writer and director of ‘The Avengers’ and its impending sequel has admitted that he probably won’t direct the split ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ films.

Whedon explained that it’s “very doubtful” that he will be back for the third and fourth instalments to the superhero posse’s collective saga. Apparently he wants to create “original” cinematic content instead, however he did admit that he’d still love to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Judas. Too far?

Joss Whedon: Fox Owns Marvel’s Best Female Superheroes

Not satisfied with dampening expectation for ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ a tad, Whedon also spoke out about the quality of female superhero characters at Marvel’s disposal.

Whedon declared, “most of the best [female] characters in Marvel are owned by Fox, let’s face it!” Who could he be talking about? Probably The Invisible Woman, Jean Grey, Storm, Rogue and Emma Frost to name but a few.

He makes a good point. It’s a bit harsh on Pepper Potts and the Black Widow though.

James Gunn Teases Groot’s Death

Actually, come to think of it, it’s been a rather depressing week for Marvel.

Not only have Whedon’s comments been horribly negative, but ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ director James Gunn conducted a mammoth live Q&A and screening of his hit blockbuster, during which he teased that Groot might have died at the end of the film.

However, those of you who have seen ‘GOTG’ will be more than aware that a Baby Groot was seen dancing in a plant pot after Rocket collected his shrubs following his heroic antics to save the Guardians.

Vin Diesel will still voice whatever incarnation of Groot does appear in ‘GOTG 2’ anyway, so it’s not that big a deal because he’ll look exactly the same! Or is that me being Grootist?

Ewan McGregor Was Almost Doctor Strange

Ah, finally some good news. Kind of. Ewan McGregor has admitted that he was in the running to play ‘Doctor Strange’ in Marvel’s upcoming origin story for the Sorcerer Supreme.

McGregor admitted that he was “intrigued by” ‘Doctor Strange’ and “liked the idea of creating, or being a superhero character.” Unfortunately for the Scot Marvel liked the idea of Benedict Cumberbatch playing ‘Doctor Strange’ instead. He’d have been perfect for it 15 years ago though. Or if Doctor Strange had a huge drug problem.

Robert Downey Jr Talks Iron Man & Captain America: Civil War

And finally, Robert Downey Jr. has explained that he decided to play Iron Man in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ because Marvel made him “feel needed.”

The studio also admitted to RDJ that his refusal would mean that they would have to severely alter their plans and as Downey Jr. is a team player he decided to help out his comrades in need. What a lovely gesture. I’m sure his multi-million dollar contract helped seal the deal too.

Meanwhile RDJ once again confirmed that ‘Age Of Ultron’ will set up the seismic events of ‘Captain America: Civil War’, before refusing to comment on who out of Iron Man and Cap is the baddy. The bloody tease.

That’s all for now, folks. There will be another round-up of all the Marvel stories next week. Have a safe seven days.
